Project Information

Solid Pine. No plywood. The front and back panels are glue ups of random width boards. The sides are a straight cut of 1×12. First panel glue up without pocket hole screws and I love it! Also, I finally got SketchUp working in Linux so this one went together quite well :)

Side note: the chest in the background was finished the same way with amber shellac. It shows the color change after a couple years.

As you can see from the file the plan changed a bit when I was in the shop. Overall dimensions are there. Video shows some changes as well

Thanks Monte. The best part is I can fit an entire empty pizza box in the can now. No more stacking it on top untill its full! lol

Hello Joe. Yes, I will never use a windows based PC ever again as a daily driver. I have 3 HDD running Mint 13×64 as the daily driver. Ubuntu 12.04×64 as my "try to get used to unity" but never seemed to enjoy using it. And lastly Windows 7 on the third drive only to run SolidWorks. Now that I have SketchUp going the W7 drive will likely remain unused. I have tried several distros over the past couple years but always seem to come back to Mint. Its just easy.

Wow…Thanks everyone. The trash can obviously looks better than the plastic one it replaced but the best part I believe is now everything will be out of sight until it goes out the door….including large items like pesky pizza boxes (i love pizza). And also, glad to see other Linux users out there :)

Hmm…I don't know why I never thought of using two straight-edge boards like that when you want to glue up and keep everything even. Brilliant, love it!

Very cool. I have been wanting to make something like this to hide our current trash can but I was not sure how I wanted to go about it. Seeing yours gives me a lot better idea. I really like your design, especially the drawer at the bottom. Thanks for posting.

This is so nice. We have a crappy, dark green plastic waste bin. I'm going to make one of these, and it will look really nice with our red ochre tile floor. Thanks for sharing!

Did you happen to post the sketchup file online? I'd love to share the plan with my brother-in-law so he could build me one!

Awesome, thank you for posting the link! I can't send messages to anyone until I have at least 5 posts apparently :) Do these count as posts or do I have to start my own thread to count as a post I wonder? My husband is retiring from the Marines in May and his brother is a carpenter; I have always loved woodworking and can't wait to convince him to let me try out some of his routers and learn to use the table saw, the possibilities are endless. Cheers!

Wow this is really nice, very cool design! I could really use one of these, my Boston Terriers have been knocking over my plastic trash can and digging through the trash while I'm at work. I bet they would have a hard time knocking this over. I'm going to put it on my list of future builds :)
