Project Information

I made a bunch of these last year for office Christmas presents. I wanted something that I could mass produce easily with my mediocre wood working skills. I looked around the internet and found a commercially produced version of this. It was an interesting form and it seemed like a neat trinket that people would want to keep on their desks. I stared off with two red oak 1×4's and one .25×4 poplar boards. All three pieces were laminated together to get the thickness I needed. I went to a friends house to use his jointer to make the edges flush and get down to the final width of 3.25". On my table saw, I cross cut the long blank into individual blanks that are 3.25" wide by 3.25" high by 1.75" thick. On the drill press I drilled two 1.25" holes laid out symmetrically. The finish is just one coat of tung oil.

That was last year, does anyone have any good ideas for a small trinket like this that can be easily made in batches?

Rance's business card holders are pretty nice if you're looking for desk ideas, they can be as simple or detailed as you want them.

Or take my chip clips and do a batch of them up. If you want to show off some of your skills instead of cutting the groove on the tablesaw you could have two long thin strips, laminate a small section where the handle would be and have it be two tone (do a double length one, cut in half, and make two at a time). You could also make shorter ones for bread bags I suppose.

Looking forward to see what you do. I like the pen holder!
Keep up the good work

Always a problem, what to do for your next act. I would look at some of the business card holders. Try to keep the same theme so they become a matched set.

Nice looking pen holder.

By the way, start planning next years as you do this years.

wine bottle balancers are a pretty simple gift to make. I've got a project with that and a couple other easy holiday gifts that you might want to check out.

Nice and simple look. I like it. If you have a lathe there are always pens to put into this. If not I would saw a simple matching business card holder would work. I recently was looking for one for our craft show table and there are a number of them to be found here and on the web.
