Project Information

My step-father got a new rifle. He was keeping it in the cardboard shipping box. So, of course, I had to make him something better. He picked out the hardware and the felt for the lining. (Yes, the felt is supposed to look almost faded in spots.) Used baltic birch ply for the panels. Had some nice curly maple pieces that I used for edging the ply. Hopefully, this will hold up on hunting trips alright. I used a blue resin for the elk inlay. That was a surprise for him. That way he'll always be sure and 'bring one back.'

Really nice! Wonderful craftsmanship. Great design. With your permission I want to incorporate some design elements for the four (4) firearms I own.

Again great project.

What rifle is it for? It looks like a breakdown model.

Nice!!! How did you do the recessed places and the lining? I've been thinking of making a similar case for my trap/skeet gun.

Gorgeous rifle box, Karen. Which was more work - planning it or building it? I'm sure I already know which was more fun! It looks like a great plan wonderfully executed. I'm sure your step-father is very happy and proud.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. The resin inlay was new to me, so learning something new was fun. Kind of nerve racking but fun.

Bhack, please do copy away! It would be nice if you posted your project when you're done.

JJ, it does break apart, but I don't remember which brand.

Knothead Basically use two layers of foam. Top layer, cut out the outline of the gun. Glue on the felt- make cuts in the felt over the holes, wrap down over the edges. Glue felt to the bottom layer, no cutting. Glue layers together. Hope this gives you a pretty good idea. Not really hard, just messy working with spray glue.

This is something special! I love the box joints showing the ply 'endgrain'. Ply is very decorative used in this way. The inlay is fantastic and using resin is a clever idea. How did you route the elk design? It's brilliantly done.

thanks! I transferred the design to the case, think carbon paper. then free hand routed it with a dremel with a router base. Kind of nerve wracking, but just went slow and took little 'bites' and sneaking up on the line.

Beautiful!

I've been asked to build something similar to yours. May I ask how you mounted the hinges- on the surface or mortised into the back?

I'm pretty sure I used some surface mount hinges with the built in stop. The stops kinda of acted like feet.
