Project Information
We have been canning for many years, so this Jelly Cupboard was long over due. As a matter of fact, as if by magic, within one hour of getting the cupboard from the shop and into the dining room it was FULL!
I really enjoyed building this thing, as it was rather straight forward with dowel reinforced lap joints, ship lap backside, early hinges and fasteners (restoration parts), and punched tin panels. No, I did not punch these myself but I did have to re-punch much of it as they needed cleaned up. I have additional galvanized sheeting if I ever get the hair up my butt to try something original, however we are pleased how this turned out.
As I mention in the title, I made this out of Soft Maple. I ran into a bargain price of $2/BF for the 12/4 Maple so I jumped on 200BF of it. It sure was different, in a nice way, to work with a softer wood for once as I had only built with Ash before hand.
I finished with a Golden Oak stain and treated the front door as if it were a restoration. I wanted to leave the impression that this may have been refinished, but not too much so. I recreated an original type of wooden latch with wear marks and all.
