Project Information
This is another in my series of rafter tail tables - I have been having fun with different geometric shapes. I still have a couple of un-built designs on the drawing board (computer) - like a three sided one I am eager to get to.
Part of what I like here is the contrast between the predictable/structured base and the somewhat chaotic /unpredictable glass.
One thing I have been trying to do with the Rafter tail series is bring A&C/G&G designs into the present day. I feel the fused glass serves to bridge the old with the new - it is very much in the spirit of the Arts and Crafts Movement, while at the same time being very contemporary -it speaks loudly of being handmade and celebrates the work of modern day glass artists. I think bringing together seemingly unrelated/opposing elements in one unified design expands the style and keeps it alive.
I have also thought of some light colored figured wood - like a spalted maple slab for the top. This would do many of the same things as the fused glass - contrast with the base, and merge with the present- figured slab tops are more of a contemporary thing but are rather chaotic/unstructured as well.
