Project Information

Recently I decided to make a dog bowl / dish. The reason at first was I wanted to try a different style of dovetails. Second, I love my dogs (2 female Jack Russell's), so they need a dish as well.

The size is 475×200 x 120 mm. (for the "inch-people": now you can convert! Lol :)

It's was made form solid oak (22 mm thickness) and pine (18 mm thickness).
I planed everything by hand flat and square. (I don't have a planer)

Ofcourse, the dovetails are cut by hand as well. (I don't even have a router!,)
I didn't cut dovetails for more than half a year…... when you look very close, there are some imperfections. (I don't even have some mortise chisels)

I finished it with 4 layers of waterbased clear laquer (semi-gloss). Sanding between the coats up to 800 grit.

For the pictures, I left the metal bowls in the dish, because the circles were badly cut with a jigsaw. :)

Thanks for watching!

Very nice project, I like how you mixed the two types of wood in the dovetails.

Congrats!

I like it. My wife has been asking me to come up with an idea for a covered food/water holder for our cats. I need it covered to keep our 100lb Black Lab out of their food and water. It need to be of a nice quality like yours as it will be in our kitchen. Seen anything like that or have any ideas?

Best looking dog dish holder I have seen. The dovetails look pretty darn good to me. You have done well with minimum tooling. I appreciate your frankness on the imperfections - every piece anyone makes has them !

Excellent piece an craftsmanship. I like the contrast in the woods and the design, too!

Beautiful work! I never liked dovetails (I do admire the skill needed to do them) but I really like this! The design would be great for boxes, tables, etc. Thanks for posting.

Sweet. This is the coolest dog dish stand I've seen. It has a very clean, sharp look to it.

That's beautiful. I've got a german shepherd mix and an american eskimo who need something like this. Its been on the agenda for a while, but I'm not sure mine will look quite this good when I get around to it.

Wow, that is really cool and those are some lucky dogs! I haven't tried dovetails before, but that's on my list of things to learn.
