My wife needed a business card holder for an event she had this afternoon. I had none available here at the house so I quickly sketched out a planned design. Subconciously I think I was inspired by rilanda's Art Deco style Clock .
I had some chunks of Brazillian Cherry leftover from The Lovable Pessimist and I really like the grain in that. So I rooted to see what might go with that. I had some long strips of the same but they were too narrow. I had some Soft Maple and some Oak that fit the size I needed so badda bing, that's what I used. So there. There's my artistic process of how 'I carefully selected the materials and choreographed the lines and color gradient of the woodgrain to give it artistic balance'. Yeah right. I just pick up what fits from the scrap pile like everyone else. Its just that my scrap pile also includes 1/2" square sticks as well.
I realized after I got home that the pics really point out the problems that I'd rather hide. Well, it looks better in person. But like a good woodworker, I won't point out what I'm disappointed in. BTW, my wife really liked the fact that I included the waine of the Maple. Is that what it is called where it gets discolored close to the bark? I've got some of this stick left so I'll be duplicating this one.
Finish was a sanding of 120 followed by 220. Obviously sanded before assembly. Spray can Deft lacquer with a brush of 400 before the final coat.
Comments and criticisms welcome.
