Project Information

My first attempt at making a box. It is made from Cedar Sides, Maple Bottom & 300 Year old Black Walnut inlaid with Holly & Walnut banding. I gave it to my Wife for our 18th Wedding Anniversary. It's by far not perfect but between the books I've purchased & more importantly, the posts put here by members, I think I'm well on my way to improving my abilities! Thanks to All who share their ideas & projects, its a Tremendous help for less experienced craftsmen.

Super nice job, especially for a first box! I LOVE the lid! Nice inlay. What technique
did you use to burn the date into the box?

Well as much as I would like to take credit for the engraving, I left that to the Professionals! A local Trophy Shop in my area, Lumberton Trophy & Awards, who's owner has become a friend of mine actually engraved for me.

Kyle, it looks like all the basic elements are in place. The walnut is beautiful. I like the foot concept on this. The 45s look tight did you use a band clamp? The varied lengths of the corner splines is an interesting design. Now on to the hinges. Keep boxing and keep posting.

Happy anniversary! I'm sure your wife loves it! The contrast between the dark walnut and the lighter cedar and banding is really beautiful.

Great first box build. The splines are always cool to me so I use them . It looks like some of your splines might not have seated fully. I like the inlay, good job.
