Project Information

this little project started a few weeks ago….
i am the proud owner of a little HITACHI SV12SG 240V palm sander….if you want a review….its great…done..
using a home made fingerjoint jig and a little dewalt lamiate trimmer made a snug little box to use for my sander…..the corners are fingered together at a size of 10mm…the base is rebated in to place just like the top….the handle is laminated then a full length sliding dovetail will ensure even if the glue fails…the joint wont…
i recycled a old tool box catch and fixed into place…but the box did not look right….cue the wire brush…lots of elbow greece…...a health dollop of dark rich polish…..erm….and one more little touch…erm…..oh yes….blow torch….it went up a treat….with a firm brush and a few more burnings i was happy with the distressed look…will post some updated pictures of inside and when its not on fire

total burn time was only about 30 seconds….most of the fuel is from the polish….which is extinguished from a single breath….

I Like It!! good pics, look forward to the others when the finishing is complete. Thanks for the review, I have a Hitachi Drill and very happy with it. May be adding more of their line to my collection.

I thought this was going to be a story about a project that went so wrong you set it on fire.

Okay you definitely found one of the best ways to get 1.5k+ views with a plain box project! :D
And I must admit that I love the idea of using a torch for distressing a finish on a box. I saw it used on vessels, but never on boxes. Will have to try! :)

Great photo. That is what I would call a box with a certain flare.

I have thrown a couple of boxes in the stove, but never thought to photo them.

Great to see someone is teaching real carpentry projects.

I've felt like using this technique to "finish" a few projects

Nice work

ruddy, Or maybe cypress? Quite large grain and would scorch nicely.

That is an eye catching photo. I thought it was covered in vodka and set on fire to show how fireproof the box is!! That is a nice box to hold a proud possession!!
What is burning on it, the finish? The wood looks to be fine….............Jim

I never thought of giving my projects a bit of charring round the edges,
thanks for the idea.

but, how did you get it alight? was it with gas or built a fire around it till it caught?

My problem is, after lighting I wouldn't want to put it out!
