Project Information

Friends of the family came back from Hawaii with a piece of Koa fire wood.
I sliced it up and let it air dry. It ended up making (7) 3/4 inch X 2 inch x 10 inch pieces. A year went by quickly because I didn't know what to do with it. They wanted something to be made from it but also wasn't sure what. Here it is after all of that waiting. Approx. 25" x 20" inches square and 19" tall. Only have a handful of 1×1 inch x 1/4 inch pieces left.

Koa, Purple Heart, Hard Maple. Legs and frame are Brazilian Cherry.

Tried to match the apron with the weave pattern. It's close.

Sanding sealer and clearcoat finish.

Excellent design and workmanship. You should be very proud.

You probably know this but, just in case you do not, the Purple Heart is almost certain to fade and become more brown than purple. You can slow that down with a good preservative and keeping it out of the sun.

Wow Koa Firewood, That's bad, almost as bad as MsDebbie painting some Walnut.

Great job on the table.

Don't know how many hours I spent on milling the wood. Let it set. Stare at it some more.
Move it out of the way. Build something else, go hunting, stare some more.
Deciding what to do with it was a time killer. The actual process of the build was less.

It's not a perfect build. Still have the same old glue-up issues.

Does the purple heart fade out?

Thanks for the kind words.

Love! Maybe this is what I should do with some of the boards that people tell me "are too pretty to cut on" :)

Stunning…. my only critique is the lack of continuity of grain along each weave.. apart from that… Stunning…

Once again - I am floored. What a timeless piece. Some of you guys are the modern day masters. Generations from now, people will see this table in a museum and think about the skill and finesse it took to create it. Outstanding work!
