My First Project - although unfishined

Well… I had a piece of wood and I didn't care what I made but I was determined to make something. So I chose to make a picture frame. Considering that it's my first project I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. It's just a pretty simple frame. I used a 1/2" roundover bit for my edges and my miter saw for the cuts. The reason it is unfinished is that I haven't glued it up yet due to lack of the appropriate clamps. But as I said… I'm pretty happy with how my joints came out. I'm either going to build a clamping device today… or buy a Bessey clamp that will do the job. Also going to get the finish for it today. I'll share again when I get if done. Hopefully that will be today. Off to the store now!!

Beautiful frame AngieO.

Maybe make a groove in the back to place the picture before glue up?
Or, you can route a groove (rabbet) after glue up, but you'll have round
corners.

I admire your determination.

I usually just use a ratchet strap and some 2X2 stock glued and screwed at 90° for each two pieces.

If I want to get a little fancy, I round over the back edge for the strap to slide over.

If I want to get really fancy, I put a slot through the back side and round it over so the strap can't go anywhere.

To get really really really fancy, I sand and wax the edges of the rounded side so the strap slides easier.

Don't forget, in lieu of having no clamps. Your blue tape would work in this situation…..

You will also want to make the Joints Stronger.

Overall Looking Good So Far !!

For a first project you are on your way to a great picture frame. There are a lot of ways to clamp a picture frame, I'm sure you will find a way that suits your abilities and resources. Keep up the good work. Too bad you aren't near East Tennessee, I'd give you some of my cut off pieces of walnut, maple, cherry, and oak for your projects.

Well, what's next? a box probably… same process for the sides and glue them together there is the box. Those time that I dont have clamps, I just nailed a temporary bracket a piece of wood on 4 corners while the glue is drying. An ordinary staples can reinforce the corner and for higher strength a spline (inserts on the sides or inlay on the back.

Being your first, I like the way your 45 degree miter joint… so perfect. That will be the quality that you need… precision and accuracy.

Keep it going.

Very nice, when first looking at it, it seemed to have an ocean theme or feel about it, like it would work well in an ocean beach house.

DaddyZ is right about useing the tape, I use it all the time to hold my box drawers together for my bandsaw boxes, only if that's painters blue tape you are using then it doesn't have the holding power as normal masking tape does so that would prob be better then the blue painters tape. Once again Angie very nice job, can't wait to see more projects keep em coming. :)

Thanks guys. I didn't get to finish tonight although I did get my slot put in the back to hold glass and whatever I put in there. I traded in my router table (that wouldn't fit my router) and got a new one. I felt much better about adding the groove using the table. I've sanded everything down and I'm ready to glue it up.

Ok…. So finishes….? I found an old can of Poter Paint Wood Stain. It says "clear base". Tested it out on a scrap piece. Didn't like what it did but not sure if that's because it's not what I should be using or if I just don't like it.

Gonna glue up tonight and finish it tomorrow. I welcome any tips on the finishing process.
Again…thanks for the comments.

Strapping tape, band clamp,or ratchet strap works well to clamp these. Shellac is a nice finish that is pretty easy to do. Now would be a great opportunity to learn splined miters (simple to do, adds strength and longevity to your frame, and also adds some visual interest). Others call these feathers/keys/etc.

I've watched several YouTube videos on splines. Definitely want to try that. I have a friend who has some "scrap" wood, as he calls it. Last night he was telling me that he had one purple heart. He said they were small pieces but they are thicker than what I'd use.
I did get a clamp for frames. Apparently it's something my husband will use too. So it was worth it.

Oh…. And I don't have my table saw yet. So what else could I use?

Really? You can do that on a router table? I think I have 4 straight bits, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4… And I think maybe a 1/8. Is there one that small? I bought the first three new, but the used router I bought came with 7 bits. I was thinking it was 1/8.

George… That's the clamp I want to make. I don't have a drill press though. I tried to play around with my drill and see if I can make some holes but my accuracy was way off. I have a friend who will let me use his… But he's an hour and a half away. Going to have to plan a trip up there.

Today I glued up my pieces after cutting my groove in the back last night. I started gluing and wouldn't you knw it… I had a visitor that I couldn't turn away. My glue up isn't as nice as when I taped it up. I'm still pretty happy with it. I even made a second frame today. Wow! It went much quicker. I already have it glued up and clamped. Now I'm off to the store for some finish. Also going to look for some wood to make a box. It's amazing how much faster things went once I had my router tabs set up.

And yes… This is quite addicting. I hate that I have plans tonight. I wish I coud skip them and just go play with my tools and get my box made.

Looking forward to see the finished project. Remember the imperfections that you see in it is like the fine cracks in leather that shows that it is real leather. They are usually only noticed by yourself. Every project that you make is an improvement of your skill and the more you do it, the more you will enjoy this relaxing hobby. Always follow safe working practices as it gets difficult to do woodworking if you don't have fingers.

Keep up the good work and enjoy it :)

"old can of Poter Paint Wood Stain. It says "clear base"."
Clear Base is what they start with before adding any color pigments to it….not what you want to use.
You should be able to bring it to your local paint store and have them make you a color that you want to use from it.
Providing it hasn't already had anything added to it , and if they're willing to do it , of course : )

Tried to take some pics today but I couldn't find my card reader for the good camera. Got a couple of pics with my phone. They aren't very good but I wanted to share the finished project. I made a second one. I like how the two frames turned out two different colors even though I used the same stain. On one I applied and left and the other I applied and then wiped it off. They certainly aren't perfect… but I'm pretty happy with them. And I know i got a little glue I missed on one of them but I'm ok with it. They were fun to make and a great learning experience.

And… I got the groove cut out on both of them in the back for the mirror and such.
Well… I guess I'm not TOTALLY finished. Still need to get the glass.

Something I hadn't though about… what should I use to hold the glass and pic in the frame? Open to suggestions. Haven't really put much thought into it.

I think you can be proud of your first project. They came out very nice. In the olden days they used small tacks to secure the glass and picture with brown paper tape to seal it of. You can also use silicone to secure the glass with the picture and a backing board from 3mm mdf to fit inside the frame then secure the backing board with with brown paper tape.

For your first project, I'd say you did a wonderful job on them!

Keep it up… You're doing good!

Thank you.
