Project Information

Actually turned this without anyone in mind to give it to, just really liked the grain I was seeing on the rough blank. My wife liked it so much she decided this one wouldn't be leaving our home! finished with polycrylic as an experiment, it finished up pretty well, but i find it more difficult to apply smoothly. Thanks for looking!

Great piece of wood. I like the shape too. A piece to be proud of. You know a piece is pretty special when the wife decides to lay claim to it.

The flared base is a nice touch.
It looks like you got wood just in time before some of those spalted spots turned soft.
I like to use one of the salad bowl finishes. Both General and Behlen make good ones. I just wipe them on with a piece of soft cloth which I can dispose of after each application. (Like oil finishes be sure the cloth dries out before putting in the trash. It can self combust. They are also non toxic, can be washed (by hand). The Behlen brand is thicker and builds up faster. Both take 3 to 4 coats and I buff with 0000 steel wool between coats.
I turn with a chuck and leave the recess I use in the bottom of the bowl so I can remount the bowl for the buffing process.
