Project Information

This is my 100th project to lumberjocks. It was in a long list of things to do for some time. This doughnut is made entirely of plywood (288 pieces). It took me 3 days to build the blank and 6 houres to turn and finish it, keeping in your mind that I used the same wooden chuck that I designed and made for the first doughnut few years ago.
photos # 4,5 and 6 show the rubber bands I used to hold it inside the wooden fence. I had to go back to my old lathe that I had renovated to take bigger diameter object as this chuck was nearly 40cm in dia.
NOTE: Picture # 6 is replaced to show the chuck I made to hold the doughnut from its centre to turn the outside.

Looks like a bagel to me. Now you have to make a giant cup of coffee to dunk it in.

Your work is inspiring! As a new turner I will be checking back into your blog and projects regularly. I really like this piece and would like to know more about the glue up process and how you built it…

All the best,

Todd

That is great. It's especially interesting to me because you used the same Harbor Freight lathe that I have. Just goes to show a good woodworker can make do with any tools he has, and they don't have to be the best and most expensive tools available. It's the craftsman, not the tools, that creates the masterpiece.
Thanks for showing.

Very wonderful plywood doughnut, the rubber band chuck explains how you turned the face and the inside,
but what kind of magic wand did you use to turn the outside? As usual you have created another wonder
out of wood and are making me scratch my head as I wonder how in the heck he did that. Thank you for
sharing all your projects and keeping us thinking.

Sure looks GOOD!

It's truly a Wonder!

Are you going to coat it with Chocolate or powdered sugar? Got Milk too?
Looks good enough to eat!

Sam, you really have a knack of doing the IMPOSSIBLE!

After all, who ever heard of a Plywood Doughnut?! Especially one that BIG!

Awesome craftsmanship!

I'm not going to ask… How did you do that?

Thank you!

Congrats on turning 100!

This is certainly a conversation piece and I am impressed.

But after looking at your pictures I do not think I would want to be anywhere near that lathe when your whole set-up was in action!

I have heard that you can splinters from a "club" sandwich and now I have to add a Shakouri doughnut to that list!

Other than the fact it is a beautiful piece, what made you decide to make a wooden doughnut … especially that SIZE? Are you going to make the saucer to place it on?
