Project Information

This is a custom tall cane made for a gentleman who wanted something special in a cane and he liked the unique grain of Ziricote. When working with this wood you never know what pattern will show up (or disappear) when you whittle away to shape it. No matter how much I try to read into a raw piece of stock, the pattern is rarely what I expect as the grain can suddenly blossom into an exciting display of contrasting colors or disappear and fade with each pull of the rasp or file. For this piece I was fortunate to be able to get the shape that I needed for a comfortable grip and have the grain show it's glory.

The handle is Ziricote and the collars are Ziricote and Redheart and the shaft is solid Macawood.

My goal is to provide a comfortable walking aid that is also sturdy and has a sense of style.

Meilie, I love the look of the Zircote on the handle, especially how the black lines make the curved areas look almost like a beetle. That must be one stout cane! All of those woods are so hard! That thing will be around forever! One of these days, I'd like to put a hand on one of your canes, just to feel what I know is perfection in ergonomics! Very nice work.

What's the finish?

Hi Meilie,

I really love your canes, this one is very graceful and perfectly shaped. It makes me want to grab it and start waking with it even thou I don't use a cane. Super workmanship, keep up the great work.

Thank you all for your comments (and support). My early pieces where coated with multiple coats of Minwax Tung Oil, and although it made the wood "POP" and very sexy, the process took days to finish, with mandatory drying between each coat and when the humidity rose, it was impossible to get a good, quick finish.

We are now trying several brands of friction wax finishes that you apply quickly for an even coat and then buff on a cotton wheel. We use a cheap lathe to hold the buffing wheel, as you have a nice strong motor that is relatively quiet and adjustable in speed.
