Nice jbox! The sycamore and the walnut go beautifully together. I like the thin and thick splines too.

I have been on a sycamore kick here lately and came across this. It's very nice. To me it looks like it has a bit of Green and Green in it, witch I love.

Wow, beautiful piece. You are certainly right when you said Sycamore to my question. Is this wood expensive to purchase? I'm surprised we don't see this more as a staple wood like oak, cherry, maple. Any idea as to why not?

I have been able to buy it from a local sawyer. It is relatively inexpensive from him $1-2 a bf. It is easy to use. But it is not very hard (dents easily) and is prone to checking. I would guess regional availabilty is the driving cost factor. But I really like to use it. When quartersawn, it has a beautiful grain pattern and color variance. I am not sure the sycamore tree groes up north.
