Project Information

This is a zig zag chair designed by Gerrit Rietveld in the '30's. I just love its' dramatic and graphic look. The original is very small. This one is larger than the original by about ten percent so that I could use it as a side table. I've seen original versions of his crate chair and his red/blue chair but I've never seen an original zig zag chair. Those cantilevered mitre joints just don't stand up to use! They'll be plenty strong enough for its' use as a table though. The stain was created by using two coats of strong tea and it was finished with two coats of poly.

A beautiful example of this design. Reitveld would probably have approved of the stain too. Nice one.

Very nice.
I like the box joints in the back.
The hand hold on the back is a great idea too.
I made a similar chair that is holding up well.

Beautiful but I'd be scared to sit in it if I saw it in the wild.

I like the stain color. Is the wood red oak?

Yes the woodused in the project was red oak. The stain was made by boiling six tea bags in about two litres of water. It got boiled until there was about 1 1/2 cups remaining. I discarded the bags and stain was ready to go.

I have made a Red-Blue chair(and Military Stool) using plans from the book How to Construct Rietveld Furniture. Seeing Bluemax's Zig-Zag Chair has inspired me to post a picture on the Projects page.

That is way too cool. So you say it won't hold together? Pity. Any bracing would ruin that look.
