Project Information

I have no idea what wood this is, it is from a log I picked up in a park nearby. The condition of the log (rotten) and my skills (likewise, but improving) combined to create a rather rustic piece.

This is certainly as big a bowl I can make with my midi lathe. Since the wood was extremely wet in places the piece was totally out of balance even after it was turned round.

I turned to final thickness while wet and let it dry indoors for a couple of months before I sanded and finished it. It warped a bit, but not too badly.

I went back today to pick up a couple more pieces, and there was an intact tree standing next to the pile. Judging from the leaves, I believe it to be Elm. Especially since I wondered a bit about the smell, and found this at www.wood-database.com: "Elm usually has a strong, unpleasant smell when green; though once dried has very little odor."
