Project Information

I finally got around to making a shop air cleaner. What a difference this makes!! Total cost ran about $60 and took about 4 hours to complete.

Unit is made to utilize common 16×20" filters. Constructed out of 3/4" plywood, the sides are rabbeted, then screwed and glued together. Has some internal bracing, as well as gasket material to seat the filters onto. Currently it has a 4", 1-micron furnace filter fronted by a cheap pre-filter. Fan was purchased through craigslist for $20 and came out of an old a/c unit. Fan is 1075 cfm, 4-speed, but just wired for single speed. I have wired it into a new wall switch for convenience.

I highly recommend this quick project to folks here. Keep an eye out on craigslist for a/c blower for cheap and breathe easy!!

I made one of these for my shop a few months ago. On mine I installed a 6hr timer so that I can leave it on when I leave the shop.

Yep I do need one. I have a 312sqft shop and it does not take much to fill the air with dust.
Looks great.

Could you tell me the CL search you used, and what sub board? I'm finding plenty of fan motors, but not the fan/blower unit per say. Nice work!

mrpedal, I used a CL search for furnace blower in tools and again in materials and waited a couple of weeks until one turned up. I think I lucked out a bit because the voltage, cfm, and overall size were exactly what I was looking for. With summer around the corner, there should be some of these hitting the market as people repair or upgrade their A/C units.

And it's certainly worth the wait because a new comparable motor/blower assy. from Grainger runs $330 + shipping.

Filters were both from HD. I splurged on the larger filter, knowing that I would always keep it fronted by a cheaper pre filter.

@eddy - I see that we have the same TS. Looking at your posts, I'm excited to make a version of your router table extension. How do you like the stock fence on the Craftsman?

Man no….don't buy new at Grainger….most of us know a HVAC guy. Every time they replace an AC "package unit" there is a fan motor or "squirrel cage" in it. Go to the guy's shop where he keeps all of the old units he has replaced for people. What happens is a few times a year, he separates, salvages, and sells the metals and the old fan motors to scrap yards. If you know the guy well, he may give you one, if not $20 will probably get the unit. I'm surprised at yours though being 110V…most are 220v. Still it's simple to wire.
