Project Information

This is a commission request I built this week. I sold all my cypress boxes and had to hunt up some more old sinker cypress. There is alot of new cypress at the lumberyards but none has the beauty and character like this old cypress has. This box is 8×12x4" and has a leather lined bottom.

The finish is 7 coats of buffed lacquer.

Greg, I also love making boxes, but I can not figure out for the life of me how you make these lovely boxes….you are the man. Was this your idea to start making these, or did you find a book or magazine about it? I would love to find out how to make them

Hawaiilad…Carving and sculpting boxes was not my idea. I first saw some sculpted boxes back around 1967 or 1968 when I was in Tennessee. These impressed me very much. Several other Lumberjocks also make outstanding sculpted boxes.
The boxes I create are just my interpretation and style of an old art.

Now THAT'S different… in a good way. Love it! :) I have some new cypress in the shop and I see what you mean, nothing like the character I see here.

The depth of your groves floors me….....you have got to be close to breaking through the 3/4" stock….aren't you?

well greg, you are right, the old wood is going to look better and have a much deeper beauty, this box is perfect for the wood, as it came from a sinker, which sat on the rivers bottom, with all the elements working against this wood, and look what happened when they pulled it up, it looked like this, lol…this is where your inspiration comes from…lol…what a great job, have we gotten any kind of report from jazz fest, or did i miss it…

I sincerely thank everyone..It is nice to know that things we create are appreciated. that old sinker cypress has such an amazing richness that just isn't found in the new cypress.

ohwoodeye…. I do find myself sculpting deeper into the wood but not too deep as to screw it up. I did that once before and learned my lesson the hard way…I use my calipers now to make thickness measurements when I start getting close.

grizzman…The Jazz Fest was tremendous!! I understand that they had in excess of 600,000 people there and I can easily believe it.

The Fest was spread out over 2 weeks and had a 3 day show the first weekend and a 4 day show the second…I was there for the second weekend. There were only 60 artists and craftsmen selected for each week (total of 120 for the entire fest) out of about 1600 that applied…so I felt very fortunate to be juried in.

My sales far exceeded my expectations and I am already getting calls for special custom commissions and orders. This sinker cypress was one of the special orders. The New Orleans jazz & Heritage Foundation bought one of my old sinker Cypress boxes for their archives and met a person at the fest that was part of a group filming the TV series "Treme". He said his family own a group of galleries in different cities and was very interested in having my work in some of them…one was in New Orleans that specializes in excusive wood art.

The music and food were so unbelievably good that I couldn't even begin put a descent description into words…a more professional writer would need to do that….it is a Fest that really needs to be experienced in person to grasp it.

Greg- That is some beautiful wood and of course your carving is up to (or exceeds) your usual artistry. I knew you would do super at the Fest but I'm glad you confirmed it. Try to remember us little folks now that you've become a 'super star'! This may be my favorite of all your creations. I love that sinker cypress but it is outrageously expensive around here.
