Project Information

Made a yo yo for a colleague of mine. Wood is cocobolo, 2 1/2×5/8". Mechanism is from Penn State. Finish is sand up to 2000, 1/4lb clear shellac, and Renaissance wax. Ball bearing mechanism is pretty well made. Thanks for looking!

The yo-yo is superb but it is eclipsed by the tiime, effort, and skill donated just to make a friend smile.

Really neat project, Al. I see how it is now. Doctors and professors have colleagues and the rest of us have either associates, buddies or "partners" ;)

Wow… did that being back some memories ! The yo-yo fad struck twice in my childhood - adolescence. Things used to do that… fad, go away for awhile, then start all new again: Yo-yo, hoola hoop, clackers, cinnamon toothpicks, frisbee, etc. Now when things go, they pretty much stay gone.

The Duncan butterfly was the state-of-the-art and one to have late '60's and '70's. I did know all the common tricks in those days (hesitate, walk the dog, round the world, rock the baby, waterfall, etc.), but with your project raising my curiosity I visited the Duncan site and saw their film. The moves have advanced quite a bit and includes tricks with a loop of string unattached to the yo-yo… and crazy tricks with multiple yo-yi. (?) The bar was raised while we weren't paying attention, obviously.

That grandson of mine will be getting a yo-yo now (thanks to Al's jog of my memory). BTW, he's a "buddy". :)
