Project Information

My wife has 9 goats (amongst many other critters) running around outside in the pasture. Was surfing the web a couple weeks ago when I stumbled across a hay manger something like what you see.

I figured since this weekend was her birthday, why not make her something for the animals.

Made of red cedar 2×4 stock for weathering, plus added some Cabot's spar varnish. (Varnish should also taste bad to the goats and keep them from cribbing).

Lid is 1 sheet of 3×8 roofing tin, wheels are from harbor freight with a piece of 5/8 threadall for an axle. The ribs to manger is simple a piece of economy "hog panel" cut to length and split down the middle.

Thanks for looking.

Yah
Eating the manger and climbing on it is their biggest goal in life for a Goat.

Hey Moose, the cover is certainly a good idea!
This happened to my animals twice before I wised up and put on a cover. This is why sheep are easy to eat!

Jeff, you just made my day with that photo! I can tell you that goats aren't that much smarter than sheep, so yes, a lid is a must have on these feeders.

It looks sturdy as a rock. Great choice of wood and judging from Jeff's pic, it is probably a good thing you put a roof on it!

That is an awesome manger. I could foresee a few making you some money, seriously. Maybe more than a few ! As long as there are goofy animals like that sheep, there will be people looking at your manger and thinking " THAT's what I need !!".

Juriathe,--The good old heave ho works best!
Moose,-- I have also had goats. They are far cooler animals, but as you know, they are into everything. When we had them, everything they could access was knocked over, wheelborrows, buckets, wood piles, you name it.

Update to these mangers….should anyone be looking at this & thinking of making one for your critters, don't use the chains on the lid. When the lid is in the down/resting position the chain sags. And although you wouldn't imagine it's possible, we had a goat get it's head caught up in the sagging loop the chain made. Just FYI on your build.
