Project Information

I'm not sure if this is worth posting, but it helpes me build chairs, so maybe it'll help someone else as well. I am making a dozen dining chairs with 1.75" square legs. The backs need to tilt back 5.5 degrees. I can plane a 2×4 down to 1.75, then joint 1 edge and cut 1 end square. Then I shove it against the 2 rails, clamp down and cut. I make a rough cut, then bump the fence over to the known number and take a light finish cut. The rockler clamps bolt down in some threaded metal inserts in the bottom sled. They held the leg tighter than I thought, never had a problem.

Good job . I see you put alot of work into it. I hope this is a jig you can use forever. When I make a jig I just use lumber dogs screwed by the side tight i never use the hold down screw because I make so many different chairs. If your making one chair type all the time it is well worth the time invested.

This is the second time I'm making the same chair, so I made it easy on myself. For different styles, I can move the rails and add more threaded holes if I need. This was very easy to make, so maybe I'll just leave it alone and do another one if the design changes.

Nice jig, I love when people post jigs, when I need to do a similar project I can use what I learned from here. It's on my project list. Thanks for posting.

Nice taper jig. I have made two jigs for tapers. There are so many ways of skinning this cat, (just figurative speaking of course) that we could have a whole new section at LJ to discuss the benefits of each one.
Yours does look perfectly suited for your purpose. Thanks for sharing it.

Another option is to rough cut on the bandsaw, then pattern rout the leg on all long edges. This way you can cut the front and back of a shaped chair leg.
Glad your method is working for you.
