Project Information

My wife and I tend to make birthday presents for each other. This was my present to Toni for LAST YEAR. Ok, so it's almost a year late. But I finally finished it. This is the first time I have done any kind of inlay, much less crushed stone inlay. The music on the stand is the first two measures of "As time goes by", the song we first danced to at our wedding. Happy very belated birthday my dear!

That is awesome. I only hope she didn't make you a gift that required her to destroy or give away all of her sheet music.

Beautiful music stand! Never seen one with notes inlaid.
I have seen other pieces inlaid with sand and crushed stone, etc., but I have one question: do you slightly overfill the inlay and sand it level or do you underfill and finish with casting resin? I have been thinking about building one for our music minister and this is the best idea I've seen yet. Good job!!
Have a good'un

Thanks everyone. My wife is thrilled with the music stand. We have both just picked up playing music again, so the stand is getting a lot of use.

Joe;

I did overfill the inlay with crushed stone and then sanded is back down. After finishing it, I think there may be a better way, as sanding down stone was a very slow process. I finally gave up and ran the thing through my surface planer (VERY LIGHT PASS), and that took care of it. I did not use any resin at all, just superglue as the binder/filler on the stone.

Kayakguy,

That is a great gift. Better late than never!

But my real reason for posting is to congratulate you on the signature line on your postings!

I have that terrier's evil twin living next door. And I know exactly how you feel. That little yapper has somehow figured out when I am trying to nap - and raises cain - but when I come in out of the house he sits there and stares at me like I'm his best buddy. I've been giving him treats and slowly teaching him not to bark. But I'm not sure he is going to make it!
