Project Information

A part of my latest project; a set of 10 chairs, two with arms (carver), which is accompanied with a 2m80 (9'2") x 1m20 (3' 11")extending table - I post this table as soon as I have some photographs.

I cannot claim the design of the chairs, apart from the modification to include the arms on two of the chairs.

The chairs are made from European White Oak, all the lumber for the chairs and the table come from the same tree, so the colour matching is made easier. The finish on the chairs is a hard-wax oil (floor treatment) and Fiddes supreme paste wax. The upholstery was undertaken by a local professional and the material was provided by the customer.

The 10 chairs represent about 150 hours of work, but a large part of that was modifying and fitting the arms (about 30 hours). The chairs are going to be delivered today, if it stops snowing!

Very nice. Very inspiring. Would you please give a little info on the width/thickness of the parts involved. They look like they have the proportions that I am looking for. Thanks.

The front leg is 1 3/8" x 18", Back leg 1 1/16×37" Side rails 14 1/2 " x 2" x 5/8 & 14 1/2 " x 3/4" x 5/8, front rail 16" x 2" x 5/8, Back slats 16" x 2" x 5/8. The seating position is about 18" of the ground. Thats all I can remember at the moment without looking at the drawings.

I will post something soon (Poll) giving some options for the chair design - you LJs can then decide which version you would like to follow.

nice chairs! I really like the design…the oak looks great--how does this differ from American oak--color? hardness? etc…have you worked with both?

I noticed you (consciously) did not finish it with shellac/laquer? (just kidding)...

Nice chairs!

Hello Matt

North American White Oak {Quercus alba} and European White Oak {Quercus xxx} Sorry cannot find the sub-species at the moment.

Basically they are very similar, the European version is a touch lighter in colour than its American cousin, but the other characteristics are just about the same. Eu oak tends not to darken as much, but does turn more of lovely golden colour, rather than going brownish (clear finishes).

I have both types of oak in stock, the main reason I use Eu oak so much is that I can get it in 5m (16.5') lengths with widths up to 60cm (24"), which is great for table tops. But if I have smaller projects or I have to use Oak veneer, then I use the American Oak. both are the same price (KD, FAS)

With regard to finish, I never use Lacquer, in fact I do not think I have any, sometimes I wish I did, it would be considerably faster, but it just seems wrong to create something than only to cover it in plastic, it reminds me of people who buy expensive sofas & Chairs, then get them covered in plastic - you cannot feel the quality of the sofa, so you might as well have bought a really cheap plastic sofa in the first place.
