Project Information

Sorry about the extreem simplicity of this jig. But it is the simpicity that makes this jig kinna special.

So I am working on the top for the dresser I am making and I had a hard time holding in my vise. At one point I had a 3/4" stick leaning into the vise to keep the thing from racking. I was going to build a little t-shaped space, but instaed I made this stack of plywood. Each shim is just under 1/4". As most jigs, I made this out of scraps.

1. The Anti-racking spacer in action, with the top of the dresser also clamped in the same vice.
2. The anti-racking spacer finished.
3. I used loctite to keep the nut on the b olt. (I could not find a lock-nut this size)
4. I drilled the whole pack of shims at the same time.
5. The shims are 2" x 3" x 1/4".
6. Hing this spacer where you can find it, but out of the way, right under the vise. (just added this a little after posting)

Below is the dresser I am working on:

I will have one of those by this time tomorrow! Then I can pitch that pile of pieces I have stacked near the vise that I use for anti-rackers. What a good (Simple) idea. Thanks for posting this tip.

That is such a helpful idea. I'm frequently looking around for the right sized scrap to use as a spacer in the vice, and then of course it falls through every time I loosen the vice. This simple spacer handles both tasks. It will be the first thing I make tomorrow morning when I head down to my workshop.

Gfadvm, that's the best complement I could ask for. Thanks!

Kranky, yup love simple! Just cutting out all those extra steps, so we have more time to post on LJ.

Grant, welcome to the ARVS-club. I think we should all be doing it, right. Just do it with moderation.

It's a great jig. I made one out of 1/4-inch hardboard, and I use it all the time.

That's a project that has "copy me" all over it.

Sign me up for the ARVS club - you may have just saved my vice from an untimely replacement (painful though that may be). Thank you

Phil, great idea to use hard board for this spacer.

Tootles, you are in, member of the ARVS-club. I still have a position open for secretary in the club, what do you think? I am glad you did not send your vise into early retirement.

Doug, I am just a simple man, with simple ideas, making simple jigs. I am glad you love it.

Hi Willie, you have always such nice complements, thanks. Did you notice your 604 on the dresser?

Dennis, I think you are the FULLEST member of LJ already, they don't come any fuller than you…. ;-). And this comes straight from the chairman of the ARVS-club himself!!!
