And here is the final product at least the wood portion, I left it a little well I don't know rustic I kinda thought a turtle should be. The stain was a water based one just because as I said my girls will be handling it close to their face when the carry it at least my 4 year old will. It had a smell like chocolate thought that was weird, I am curious to see if anyone else gets that smell when the use it.

The last part of the project or part three "Clone wars" maybe 'teenage mutant stools" anyway, is to put the foam on it and then the fabric. I am really foggy on how I am going to do that part as it is added on and not part of the plans and I can't sew which will mean I will improvise. I got some furniture tacks and am going to use them to hold the fabric just not sure how. I think I will glue the foam some how to the stool to keep it from moving and putting stress on the fabric and tacks.

This last picture shows the new step stool with the old one, it was not my most shinning moment, but I have a soft spot in my heart for the little guy and think I will keep it in my shop for when the kids want to sit and chat or put projects on to work higher.

Jake:

Stellar job on the "tarapin" build…your kiddos will get some good use out of the stool while helping dad out in the shop…..and for just sitting and coloring, reading, etc. I think the "rustic look" as you called it appeals to the project….

On the padding and covering of the stool…..I don't think I would glue the foam down to the top, just in case you have to remove it, or do repairs…..I've did a little covering, so here's how I do it…for what it's worth….I'd get a 2-3" piece of foam, cut it round to the shape of the top, with a little overhang to cover the edges to keep the kiddos from hurting their legs, and cut the cloth extra big so you can "stretch" it tight. Start by laying the cloth on (you may have to have your wife help you), and either tack in on, or use a heavy-duty stapler to start it….as you go around the top, stretch and tack, stretch and tack, keeping the cloth really tight till you're back to where you started….keeping all the wrinkles out and smoothing as you go…once you're satisified with the results, enough tacks or staples to suit you, then trim off the excess cloth, and check for fit…..piece of cake….with you and a helper, it goes pretty quick, and a lot easier…...Be sure to post it when you're finished…..I wnat to see it….

As far as glueing the foam down: That is up to you, but once the cloth is on a stretched tight, I don't think it will move any…....

Rick I had been pondering the whole issue of fabric since I posted this and had come pretty much to the same conclusions, after reading your reply though it all fit into place. I kinda needed to step back. I thank you as usual your information is on point and will make the project go smoothly.

Nice job on the 'tortoise', ...while you're in that mode, how about the 'hare' to partner up a set?

GrandpaLen I love that idea I am racking my brain for ideas for next project and am excited about a hare one. Not sure how to incorporate it into a project maybe child's chair sides or a table? hmm either way a hare project is definitely a must.

Grandpa I do haft to mention as my wife pointed out that I did do a rabbit napkin holder and therefore in her opinion have the set of hare and tortoise. I will probably sneak one in anyway.

I find many children's projects can be developed from the 'simple' pictures in their coloring books and story books.

Here's an idea to go with your turtle stool. A bunny rabbit clothes tree ( think, small coat rack).

Find a picture of a rabbit standing upright on his back legs. Use the hips and tail as one point of contact then attach the two legs, at an angle, to the body to form a triangle to the tail (think 3 legged stool for stability).
The front legs attached, similar angle to the base, and the ears standing upright, cut out with main body and head.
Shirts, jeans, jackets and pajams hanging from the ears and front legs.
The girls Mom will appreciate the encouragement you've given the girls to keep their clothes picked up.

I recently made a combo chair/clothes rack 'Giraffe' (same type 3 legged base) for my 4 yr. old Great-Grandson.
He took to hanging his P. Js. up, like a duck to water.

Work Safe and have Fun
