Well, this should keep me busy for a while. I cant wait to get started on this!! Lots of pressure washing, which means waiting for a warm day, and then LOTS of grinding and sanding. I should probably finish up the other projects I have going on,....but I tend to work on the focus of my interest at the time as opposed to working start to finish on something!! My dad helped me get this home with his tractor, pretty handy tool to have when you want to go for a project like this.

A backhoe is one major woodworking tool! How about writing a review of your backhoe and how to dig out a root ball. I've got 5 or 6 huge walnut trees on my property that I'd love to dig up.

Hal,
Unfortunately, your interest of "how to" for the digging out is pretty short for this particular project!! Gratefully for me, this tree had been pushed or blown over who knows how many years ago, and there were only 4 small roots still alive in the ground. There wasn't even a hole left in the ground any more, it had all filled in with dirt over time. It took a mater of about 10 min. to cut the trunk off, cut the couple of live roots, wrap a chain around it, pick it up with the backhoe, and drive it up on the trailer. Most of the tree was dead, but junipers are amazing trees, and this half rotted tree still had some live branches on it. I used to clear cut these trees for range management projects, and you literally have to cut a juniper completely from the ground to kill them, if any tiny bit of green growth is still attached to the stump, it will keep on growing. I've seen full grown trees that had grown out of the sides of stumps that had been cut back when the first pioneers moved into this country. I have dug up trees from the roots before, and it is a chore without heavy equipment….I will hopefully get to stick to luck finds like this one that have a lot less work in the harvest!!!!

That's why I've not tried to dig up one of my walnut root balls. I've dug holes like that before and don't enjoy the task at all. I may have to rent a backhoe for a couple of days and take them all down at the same time. It's going to be a long time before I buy a backhoe.
