I like to use recycled materials.
1) because they are free
2) because there's good stuff out there that shouldn't just end up in landfill

Spring is in full bloom here and the city is collecting large waste from around the center of town.
Most stuff is crap from peoples basements that hasn't seen the light of day for 50 years.
Sometimes you find a classic chair or 2, old tools, and lots of veneered panels of either chipboard or more commonly from older furniture blockboard( I think that's what you call it).
My only competition on these hunts are Zagrebs many Gypsies, they used to just collect the metal, but now they know some old furniutre items have resale value. Nobody but me seems to collect wood.

So, today a small haul, but stuff that could be used for numerous projects.

In the pics you see the veneered blockboard, very shiny (have to strip it), it's good quality and in good shape, with some nice book matched veneer.
Also, some nicely shaped legs that will probably get cut in half and made into 2 stools I've been thinking of.
There's also some solid beech glued panels that will be great to make box jointed drawers with, and some old jars of various sizes that have a beautiful subtle blue and green tinge to them. Ear marked for lamps or vases.

Keep an eye out for my projects and see if you can spot where these materials end up.

No doubt I'll be adding quite a few more posts in this series in the next weeks.

Great find . I do the same, day before garbage pickup I tour the area. IF I see something at driveway I stop in and ASK if I can have it. Some days are good, some days nothing. It's that GEM in the rough that makes me happy. "What I can turn this ole thing into"
Yes, we will want to see what you have made with these.

i like your style … i just took an old walmart mdf filing cabinet and refurbed it with a new coat of paint on the base and drawer and gave it a new qs red oak top out of some salvaaged 3"x5" roof joists … and just like that its better than new.

day 2 of the hunt

Managed to go out just before the sun set after spending the day out at the farm house.
What you see.
Solid beech bed rail.
Large plastic container that, judging by the smell, was used to make sauerkraut. Now it will be part of my cyclone system when I finally get round to building it.
A very dirty chair that's actually in really good shape and should clean up nicely.
A stool without a top. I think I'll just whack an oak mill end on it.
Some pine wall boards. Incredibly straight, more so than the stuff in the hardware store. Maybe use them for boxes or a small cabinet.
A bed head rest with nice veneer. It's got a scratch on one side, but there's enough good surface to make a table top I think.

You need a keen eye to see the potential in something this ugly ! (luckily I do still have one keen eye, the other ones practically useless)

There's going to be a lot more this week, as the throw out gets closer to my neighbourhood .

It's not the collecting of the materials, it's doing something with them, and having a place to put them. I have collected too many unfineshed projects with potential? Woodworkers seem to feel this way about wood scraps as well. I don't feel so bad that I have lugged around some pine boards my dad had saved from the shipping crates from WWII. LOL!

Yep! I'm always going to? Good that you have a place for your finds. Currently I am saying "NO" to more stuff! I actually have hardwood stacked and stickered under all that other potential stuff. I am doing my best to stay on my path. good luck with yours!

Hey, where did my workshop go ?

It's been a busy week of scavenger hunting and now i don't have a workshop. I have a salvage yard !!
Not only did I collect heaps of good stuff off the streets, but also helped my step daughters grandmother move out of her vikendica (weekend house). From there I got a lot of wood, some of it oak, and there were also tools, wheels, adjustable feet, screws and bolts and electrical cables and and and and. You get the idea.
Her husband (rip) had a lot of plans but didn't live to see most of them through.
I had to go out there 3 times to get it all and still need to go once more for some huge block board panels and more pine boards.

Anyway, here's some pics more now, and after the weekend I might make a short video so you can see how full my space is ! A lot of organizing to do next week.
Enjoy !
Some amazing old veneered panels. I sanded this one off and put some oil on it to see how it looks. Will make a great coffee table.

It's only pine, but it's dry and straight and will be my new workbench.
Tree Wood Wood stain Shade Plank

The load on my poor car. A bunch of melamine panels under the pine for shop storage cabinets. Some long beech planks there too.
When will I find the time to build all this stuff ?
Car Vehicle Automotive carrying rack Window Sky

Check out this bookmatched veneer ! Destined for some large drawer front.

some cool sloping front drawers, the big ugly green box is actually a dovetailed pine cabinet, but I'll make a big tool box for the back of my car out of it. An ash kids bed base and a bunch of beech.
Plant Wood Outdoor furniture Window Outdoor table

some nice grain in that ash.
Wood Rectangle Wood stain Hardwood Flooring

Some of the stuff from the weekend house.
You'll notice a black sign. There were heaps of these. Straight flat pine boards painted black on one side with stick on letters. Apparetnly from some exhibition in the 90's the guy had planned to use for something. Storage boxes and drawers are what I plan for them. Must be 20 mtrs of the stuff at least.
Wood Floor Plant Flooring Hardwood

Amongst the tools was this AEG made in germany circular saw attachment. You attach a drill to it. It is extremely well belt and I'm thinking I can make a sharpening system for chisels and planes with it. One day.
Cameras & optics Camera accessory Automotive tire Machine Film camera

I'll leave it at that now, but there is a lot more. Even got enough wood to build a big table for our terrace and benches. I can also finally install as much light as I need in my shop at no cost what so ever.
I actually couldn't stop collecting even though I new I was running out of space, but thankfully it started raining and forced me to stop.
Today I actually have a gig doing my 'real' job, juggling. So maybe a can buy some tools next week : )
