Project Information

We hired a new designer/project manager here today at work, a Scandinavian guy named Loof Lirpa. His name was a bit odd and so was his approach to woodworking. He said he was very forward thinking but I think he got it all backwards. This is his first (and only) project. What a strange one it was.

Right away he brought in this really rich client who said (according to Loof) that he wanted something nice and useful but very unusual. So after a bit I was given plans to make three simple, sturdy but quietly elegant Ikoro benches for a sauna.
Fair enough, but then they were also to have 1/4" MDF edging on them, unsanded and unfinished! WTF?

It didn't seem to matter to him that MDF was unbelievably poorly suited for this task in a humid environment and what's with the cheap junk over nice wood anyway? Loof replied that the owner was probably feeling a little guilty at having more money than anyone sensible knew what to do with, so he was expressing his solidarity with the common working man by using this most basic material. If we had to live with it, so would he. Uh, sure. So can we Occupy his sauna?

I managed to talk Mr.Lirpa into a few grooves to help it out a bit appearance-wise and it was only applied (surreptitiously) with double faced (no good, lying, hypocritical) tape so that we could rip it off cleanly next week, but out the door it went.

I get paid by the hour, those were interesting ones (all 24 of them), and if any LJ here can say why he was really fired (the next day by our boss) then you win a small prize. i.e. My admiration at both your quick wits and patience with this elaborate post.
(I'm channeling Moment here I think)

Various dimensions
and time
and finish.

Build on LJ's.

A young Loof

Middle aged and a bit tired of being made a laughingstock

Old age, resigned to it, just after being fired

Ah Loof…I wondered what happened to him. I haven't seen him for at least a year. Strange fellow that Loof.
Seemed like a very competent woodworker but I occasionally found him to cut twice and then measure once. At times he didn't seem to know his forsner bit from a hole in the ground…he was a pretty backward fellow who some described as Maximum Deficient Fellow, a condition often referred to as MDF. It's pretty obvious that
Loof lied on his application about his true identity and for that reason he was dismissed.

One of the guys I used to work with was a loafer and he got fired because of that. Aloof, a loaf and a laugh.

Nice one. At least here people laugh at april fools jokes. I posted one at router forums about the release of a new Bosch Xtra plunge router and got chastized for wasting the admins time ?!

You got me! I read the email note this morning and totally believed it. After your recent bamboo bedroom, I know that you get into some really intriguing projects. The light clicked on when I saw Lof's picture on the project page. Thanks for starting my day with a smile.

Don Cutlip - It took me a while to figure it out too. I don't want to spill the beans entirely, but here is a hint… consider how strange it would be if someone refered to you as Piltuc Nod.

I think those MDF edges will protect the wood during shipment to its destination. Once in the sauna, to feed the fire of the boiler …
Well said Gene.

Creo que esos cantos de MDF servirán para proteger la madera durante el envío a su destino. Y una vez en el sauna, para alimentar el fuego de la caldera…
Bien dicho Gene.

The day is done, the secret revealed. So here's the real deal, clean-shaven and true.

And Loof? Invigorated by his brush with fame at Lumberjocks, he's feeling youthful again and is off to spend some time "alone in the wilderness" - till next year. We shall not see the likes of him again, at least not on my watch.

Thanks for looking and commenting. It was real fun.
