Project Information

Here is my first furniture project, made with hand tools only, in cherry. I used a jig as you can see in the pictures to hold the pedestal while I carved it from square to round. You can use wedges to keep it from moving in the jig as you work on it. Then cut the curved profile into the square block. Then take it to 8 sides then to 16 sides.

I carved sliding dovetails for the feet. There is a cross support underneath the table top which is wedged to the pedestal, then the top is screwed to the cross piece from underneath.

Finished with BLO.

Absolutely beautiful. I love anything Shaker. This table is a classic. I've seen many over the years, but all have been done on the lathe. Your's is the first stricktly with hand tools that I've seen. You are indeed a Shaker Craftsman. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful table.

Thanks all for the comments. Yes, I carved sliding dovetails, which was challenging, but it turned out nicely.

Yeah, that's great work. When I first read the title, I thought "The pedestal wasn't done with hand tools!" . You proved that wrong. It is a great looking table, on my list of projects to do. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks! Yes sliding dovetails for the feet, which took some time to make them fit.
