Here is my first furniture project, made with hand tools only, in cherry. I used a jig as you can see in the pictures to hold the pedestal while I carved it from square to round. You can use wedges to keep it from moving in the jig as you work on it. Then cut the curved profile into the square block. Then take it to 8 sides then to 16 sides.
I carved sliding dovetails for the feet. There is a cross support underneath the table top which is wedged to the pedestal, then the top is screwed to the cross piece from underneath.
Finished with BLO.
