Project Information

I wanted to create something that I could put my beer on while I was playing darts. This is in a small 10'x11' room. I have a belief that if you can mount something on the wall, and you can clearly see the floor, then it doesn't really take up any space in the room. It also makes vacuuming really easy!

This is only the 2nd piece of furniture that I have made and I have a lot of ideas about how to improve upon it. I love how clean it appears, but I want to incorporate more curves in the next one. I'm thinking about some kind of a fair curve along the length of the drawer bottoms. If you guys have any ideas let me know.

This project measures 73"long x 13"tall x 12 3/8" deep and it is made of several woods. the Top is Wenge, Yellowheart, and Leopardwood. The Case and drawers are made of Wenge and Sapele.

The drawer fronts are a Sapele overlay, with through dovetailed Wenge and Sapele for the drawer boxes. I used 10" accuride drawer slides. I think I will go with some Blum drawer slides next time.

The picture with the drawer open also shows 2 small boxes that I made, 1 of which was the inspiration for the top made of wenge, yellow heart, and leoparwood.

The top was a bit challenging to make for my beginner level skills, but it turned out pretty well. I used a roundover on the top edge and a 45 degree chamfer on the bottom. I bought two handplanes and started learning how to use them on this project. Learning and trying to teach wood working to myself has been an amazing experience so far. It is humbing how much I still feel that I need to learn.

I love the look of the wood you used and how you incorporated the wood together in the design. I haven't used Wenge before. I hear it is nasty to work with because it splinters easily. I just finished a project with leopardwood and it splinters easily even when its sanded to 500!

Beautiful work.

I can't tell you how many Wenge splinters I have bled from not to mention how many I have simply pulled out. Once you get it planed and sanded it is fine to work with but can be pretty miserable in the raw form.

Cool design! I love the Sapele board you used for the drawer fronts. If that's where beers go during a dart game, make sure your guests use coasters! It would be a shame to get moisture rings on that top.

For everyone else reading - Yes, Wenge can be really nasty stuff. The dust is super toxic for your lungs and its splinters can cause nasty infections. And it does splinter very easily. The grain is like brittle, compressed straw. It's beautiful wood, but be super careful if you decide to use it.

I finished the Sapele with a washcoat of part wax-free shellac and denatured alcohol and then I used General finishes Clear Satin gel Topcoat.

I used a cleat roughly 54" long made of some left over sapele. I took a board and ripped it down the table saw at a 45 degree angle resulting in 2 halves. One half was installed in the cabinet and the other half was mounted on the wall. I can lift it off the wall pretty easily if I want.

hi Jamie! I like this piece. I am looking now for something like that in the hallway, 35 45 inches by 12 inches…. is it possible?
