Project Information

I made this oak bed frame to complete my bedroom set. The original design was from wood magazine Issue 187 November 2008:

But I didn't really like the pencil-posts or canopy top, then I found a video from St Pierre Woodworking on how to make the spiral legs.

To make the legs round, I made this simple jig for the router:

After I laid out the spiral lines and drilled the holes, I used an angle grinder to grind the spiral in the legs.

Then I turned the tops of the posts on the lathe, which was my first time using the lathe. After the bed was complete I stained and polyurethane it to match my bedroom set. I hung the legs up so it would be easier to finish:

Here are some more completed pictures:

Thanks for looking!
P.S. I am entering this in the furniture contest on Instructables.com So if you are on Instructables, please vote! Thanks!

Thanks Bill! Without your video, I would have never made the legs like this.

Johnathan,
Thanks! There was LOTS of dust! I had to wear safety glasses, dust mask, and a face shield and I still was getting dust in my eyes!

Yes, the holes were used for both, but mainly a depth gauge. Check out Bill's video from St. Pierre Woodworking on YouTube and you can see how it is done.

Great Work! Thanks for the link to 'Instructables'. I would have voted for the bed had I seen it in time. I was not with Lumberjocks back then. Thanks for the info.
