Project Information

I have always sawed, planed, and sanded wood unto submission but have wanted to try some live edge projects since seeing the beautiful projects listed on ljs.
The shelves are from the same log, this is visible in the picture on the drill press. The log was a downed red cedar on our daughters farm. The legs are from standing dead cedars in our woods ( nothing but heartwood left )
The shelves are assembled with all thread running from top to bottom.
Finish is shellac, my first project with shellac and I love it.
Once again thanks for all the ideas and thanks for looking.

You did a beautiful job on these shelves! The smoothness of the wood and the shellac finish is amazing. How about splitting those supports and cutting a square groove down the center with a dado blade and then glueing them back together? Drilling those holes looked to be very frustrating! You might route the slot after splitting the supports? I'm always looking for a better/simpler way to do complicated things. I too get my inspiration from this site and can't wait to try something new.

Thanks for the comments.
gfadvm, a couple of months ago I made a 3/4" pvc splitter ( for lumber stickers ) which I saw in a woodworking magazine. It called for a hole thru a 4×4 that the pipe would slide in. I don't have a drillbit large enough and my tablesaw is a small benchtop that won't hold a dado stack so I set the blade to 45 degrees and cut an inverted v in two 2×4s and than screwed them together. I like your idea also to cut a slot on the router table, I think that would work well and take less time to get a good fit.

That sounds like a good plan. There are usually several ways to skin the cat.

I'm liking that Bowtie!! Redwood is soft but with a nice finish on it , it ages and lasts for ages. Lite too. Love it.
Just watch any water near that shellac.

Lovely design, and that shelving stand made out of the same log gives really nice character, well done with shellac.

in the granite countertop mfging world, they buy slabs with "live edge", I know it's not the same as live edges from trees, but it is similar.

Typically it is trash to them, maybe gold to you?

maybe get some sink cut outs for scarely sharp sharpening….

just gotta find em.
