Project Information

This is what I call a woodworkers solution to a metal working problem. Made of SPF 2×4's from the big box store.
The pictures pretty much tell the story. As you can see in pics 3 & 4 the cone is made using the bowl from a board method.
I am more than happy with the performance of the cyclone. I have filled the drum 5 times and there is not a handful of dust in the dust collector bag. Much more effective than the thein separator I had before.
Up next is to replace the filter bag on the DC with a cartridge filter and re-plumb the dust collection pipe.

If you have any question feel free to ask.

Looks just great, and I like your wood solution and general Ingenuity. I wish I had space in my shop for something like this.

I mean this in the best way possible… That is just a sick amount of crazy!

Very interesting.

Amazing!
It looks like pre historic tool, perhaps a part from a old mill.
That is way the coolest cyclone I have ever seen.

Did you make a full board and cut it in half, or did you just glue up the half circles and go from there. Really
like your use of splines to line up and strengthen your joints. I have been thinking about doing something
similar like WoodguyNC project #49826 and you on project #55197. My two Thein separators have been
working OK, but this might be too tempting of an idea to pass up. Thank you for sharing.

My goodness!

Ever since joining LJ's I've suffered from a DC inferiority complex. My DC is the straight HF 2hp unit-no mods.
Now, it's worse than ever! How embarrassing that I only have a stock HF DC! What am I to do?

When I'm busy, I can empty the DC bag every week.
It always makes me cringe when a small chunk goes up and strikes the impeller blades.

This is an amazing seperator. It might give me an excuse to build my bandsaw circle jig…
So many projects, so little time.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Wow, You have opened my eyes showing me that if you set your mind to build a tool you can do it. Just the know how is all you need and you just helped me with that. What is the angle you used for the cut to make the cone???

Hmm.. different profession, but I am still taking this as a professional challenge. You and Aviad.
Three different ways of making a cone out of wood. I am completely impressed, here I am seeing only shapes and you saw a functionality of physics. This gives me lots of things to think about. How Big can I make a cone?? What else can a cone do? Awesome.

@Bluepine38 I started with 2 glue-ups around 12"x24". I then cut the dados to accept the splines.
Then to the band saw to use the 1/2 circle cutting jig. Then glue the two 1/2 circles together with splines for alignment and strength.
I look forward to seeing your dovetail bowl. If you have any questions send me a message.

@Drew From what I read online most cyclones are between 15 and 20 degrees. So with a 3 1/4" thick blank and cutting 1 1/4" wide rings it worked out just right. You can see the alignment marks I made in pic 5. They are spaced 1 1/4" apart and allow you to get the angle just right so you don't have a cone that is stair-stepped.

Scott….

Awe inspiring design, ambition, and creation. The fact that it actually WORKS AS DESIGNED … well … that's just 10X as cool !

Don't let me making this a "favorite" lead you to believe I'm going to try to copy it. I'm dumb, but not stupid. I just want to have it to refer to, when I try to remember what's possible !

Beautiful !

I've been contemplating something similar ever since I got my HF 2 years ago.
I was planning on building mine from MDF, like a barrel with CNC carved staves. Epoxy coating the inside to get it smooth.

Recently I decided I was going to just build a Thien top hat, as it would be much easier.

Now you've got me rethinking my plans. hmmm.

Excellent work, btw.

@Ger21 I considered coating the inside with epoxy but ended up just using poly. I was worried about wear from the sawdust and then I realized that I had used a fiber drum with a thien baffle for over a year without any wear. And this cyclone is far thicker than the fiber drum.
