Project Information

This is my first ever cane. I want to thank "mmh" for her wonderful detailed instructions, she inspired me to try this project. Here is a link to her online tutorial http://www.instructables.com/id/How-To-Make-A-Custom-Fancy-Walking-Cane/.

I made this for an older fishing buddy of mine. The handle is in the Darby style and made of Black Walnut with a Maple spacer. The shaft is of Mahogany. I cut the handle out with a bandsaw and then used a Foredom and carviing burr to shape it. I wanted to use a draw knife for the shaft but the grain would grab and dig in no matter what direction I cut. I'm just learning the draw knife and must be doing something wrong. So I ended up shaping the shaft on my belt sander. Not as Zen, but it got the job done.

Wish you all a healthy new year. Keep chipping away…

Beautiful first!

I've shaped most all my canes with my good old belt sander.

Nice cane. The draw knife works great in green wood but when working with dry wood you you may want to try a spokeshave. I have double blade one that works great. It has a straight blade and a curved blade. You can find pretty good deals on them at Ebay. The older ones seem to be made better than the new ones. Looks like your technique works great though.
