Project Information

Well it started while I was reading Mafe's blog on the hand plane he built. I had a small blade just laying around the shop so I thought I'd give it a try. Used maple for the main body and walnut for the outer and an oak dowel. Cut a 45 degree for the plane to rest on, and curved the nose like Mafe suggested to help the shavings clear. Got the blade "scary sharp". I was purposing this plain for small tasks like beveling edges and the such, but to be honest, this thing can do some horse work considering the size ( hope you can see the shavings in the background in the second pic)!! I am extremely happy with how it turned out. The only thing I would change is the back end, I will make the next one have a bigger butt LOL for a more comfortable grip. I got it set for some really fine shavings, and it does well with beveling edges. While not the prettiest plane I've ever seen, its mine and it does the job I meant it for. Bad thing is, now I'm wanting to make more lol. Hope you like it, but if not I really dont mind haha.

Yee ha, looks cool! I like the idea of using wood for the wedge pin but was worried it would break. I see you have made yours about half inch and it still bends a bit.
Neat little project!

@ andyboy - Actually the wedge pin was bent when I put it in lol ( it was the last bit of dowel that I had ). But I know what your talking about. I was worried about that too, one of the other reasons I dedicated it to mostly light work like easing edges. But I didnt have any metal and didnt feel like riding 45 mintues both ways to go get some. I just watched your video on the marking gauge by the way. Its next on my to do list. Love your videos!!

Hi Jimi,

I think you have made a wonderful little plane there.

There are no worry for the wood pin, it will last and even if it bend a wee bit it will just straighten the wedge effect like that so it will not slip out as easy as if it was a metal one.

I can see you could need a little more butt, 'but' what the h…, if you use it most as a finish touch plane and as a friend in the apron it will be just fine with a slim butt.

Glad that I could help to inspire you, I also have a need for making some more, I even have a handfull of blades waitings and two halvf buils shoulderplanes in the shop.

Best of my thoughts and congrat on the build,
Mads
