I like this clock a lot! What type of finish do you put on it to stop the crack from spreading? Actually, how do you finish the bark?

It's finished with a wipe on poly. 6 coats semi gloss. I only hope that the crack is done spreading. That one crack relieved a lot of stress I think. I put the poly on everything including the bark. I used thick CA glue to reinforce the edges of the bark so it would stay on.

That is a great idea. For me, it answers the question of what should I do with a few slices of a tree I have (with cracks).

I'm curious about your semi gloss wipe on poly. What brand is it? I use Minwax wipe-on poly and, to the best of my knowledge, they make no semi-gloss. I often mix their satin and gloss 50/50 because I think the satin is too dull and the gloss is too glossy.

Great question rich. I buy the semi-gloss minwax and mix it with mineral spirits 30 percent mineral spirits to 70 percent minwax. This works fabulous but you do have to put on a lot of coats to build it up. It is really smooth and can be wiped on with a cloth instead of a brush.

Wow. There are many physicist looking for this crack in the space time Continuum.
Genius!
Great work with wood that may have ended up in the burn pile.
I wonder if the two part opoxy with black dye would help on these kinds of cracks.

Very nice work. I am working on a slab for a client as well. What did you use to finish it? I was thinking of using Mirror Coat, but was unsure what the best finish would be.

Nice looking clock Luke. I made similar ones last week. The next batch I am making all have large cracks, I am planning on adding a flat metal strap with screws to keep the crack from splitting the entire piece. I will router a shallow pocket for it to sit in on the back. This method may work for your clock as well. I will sleep better at night knowing my clocks won't split in two and fall off the wall, since mine are pine and like to split.

I saw a slab of walnut similar to this not long ago and passed on it due to the crack. I didn't think it would make any thing decent and I now see how wrong I was.

That really is a nice looking clock with a lot of individual character.
