Project Information

My sophmore year of high school (2009-2010), I decided to build a solid red oak queen size bed. The process was very tedious, but it was worth it at the end! Towards the end of the year I competed in a Technology Student Association competition, held in Waco, and I place 1st place and Best in State.

You have a bright future in woodworking.
Your teacher should be congratulated too. I'm sure he/she guided you and for fortunately had the time and patients to allow you work on such a large and complicated project.

Good looking project, impressive in both execution but especially ambitious scope! To be best in Texas at anything is really high praise, good on you.
Can you show/explain on the posts; mitered connections? Splines, biscuits, what method? Maybe a birds-mouth routed joint?

nice. when I was in HS I made a gun case; basically a compartmentalized box with a piano hinge. They don't even offer shop class in my area any longer. What I can't understand is how a headboard wins a technology award… ;-)

ChrisMc45,

Thanks for your post. To answer your question relating to the bed post, they are octagons, and were created by setting the table saw blade at a 22 1/2 degree angle and running both sides of the boards on the table saw. Afterwards, I place biscuit joints along the sides to create a snug fit. Hope that helps, and thanks again.

Les B,

Thanks for you comment! My teacher has been a true mentor, not only to me, but to my whole class, and we are very grateful to have him around, none of this would be possible with out his help!

Beautiful bed, will make a great family heirloom. Where did you find the design or did you also design it?
