Project Information

Here are some photos of a box I completed sanding today. I was getting ready to put the finish on it and I just couldn't get over how nice the grain looked with the natural wood before applying the finish…so i had to take some photos first.

After taking the photos i realized that i only had a little bit of finish left in my spray can and I didnot have any other cans in my storage cabinet…so I guess I won't get any picts with the finish for a few more days anyhow.

This marblewood is one hard wood and it took alot of extra time to shape it and sand it. Alot of hours are spent sanding with sandpaper wrapped around my finger to get into the curves and my fingers hurt like hell.

Glad to see this without the finish … hopefully we will see it after. I like how crisp you sculpture lines are. Another great one.

I'm sure the finish will add a lot extra but it looks good now.

What a beautiful box. I can only image the time it takes to sand one of your boxes. I have done a few but never got myself to carve as deep as yours are done. For me the sanding is the hardest part of all.

Great job.

Glad to hear your fingers hurt!! Another good reason not to get wild with my grinder. And now I have to find some Marblewood to try. You are one bad influence on me. But, I like it. I bet even more so when i see it with finish.

Hi Greg
Another good looking box. I picked up a trick from a great marqueter, Chip Bingham. He does a video when he applies his first coat of finish. He gives the client a copy so they can share in the moment of the reveal. It can be such a cool moment and usually we're the only ones who get top see. This is one I did as an example. You should try it. We'd all like to see one of your beautiful boxes "pop" and it's a cool bonus for the purchaser.

I watched the video and it really does show that magical moment we all see when we complete a project and apply the finish. I do not have a video camera but I think i will try to take some photos prior to applying the finish on future projects. It really is a special moment when wwe get to see that transformation the finish causes and it is a really good idea. Thanks…

I was wondering how painfully tedious the sanding of this piece would be. It's beautifully done and shows you put a lot of TLC into it.

Very nice build on that box. To see this wood in a clean state of finish is so cool, makes you think why put anything on it at all. I use pipe insulation around dowels to hold the sand paper. Thanks for showing!

That's a great looking box. I really looking forward to seeing it with the finish. I don't recall having seen Marblewood before. It has very interesting grain.
