Project Information

This is the long awaited bed I built for my daughter. The first bed I've ever built. Total weight is 230 lbs. not counting the boxes to support the mattress or the mattress itself, which is 19 inches high. . It was a joy to build and a real learning process. The head board is 116 lbs. The foot board is 64 lbs. and each rail is 25 lbs. All panels are tongue and grooved and made out of 4/4 lumber. The bed measures 63 inches wide, 74 inches long, and stands 64 inches tall at the head board. The rails are 9 7/8" wide, 1 5/8" thick. . The posts are 4 1/2 " X 3 1/2" as a glue up. The arches on head and foot board are 1 3/4" thick, as are the horizonal pieces. The finish is Watco Danish Oil. Thanks for looking. BIGD1

Great looking bed & Hickory is a favorite of mine, guess because we had hickory trees on the farm. One day your girl will hand it down to her kids.

Nice work. This bed will definitely become a family heirloom. I hope you signed and dated it somewhere.

I bet that one is solid as hickory! Great job. I love the play of colors of the sapwood and heartwood. You won't find something like this at the furniture store!

Greetings from the socialist capital of America - California.
Why do you think they call it the 'left coast'?

Great project. I have heard that Hickory is very hard to machine. Is that true?

To machine hickory has it's challenge, but not like hard maple. It really is not bad at all. I enjoyed working with it. Give it a try.

very nice! we are in the process of trimming out our house in hickory-any advice on working with it? it's very hard and dense, and of course, tools must be sharp, but any other nuggets?

Donald,

That bed is gorgeous! I've had a somewhat similar arched design in my head (and scribbled on paper) to go with my bedroom armoires that I finished more than a year ago. When (and if) I ever get around to it (a few dozen more urgent projects on the list), I hope it will turn out even half as nice as yours! Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful bed, I have to build one for my son as soon as I get a place to do it. I really like this design. I don't want to copy but I am sure I will be inspired. LOL
