Project Information

A while back I made a Cocobolo Box and I decided that its twin needed to come visit. It is difficult to find good Cocobolo these days…especially with similar grain characteristics and coloring. The second box has a much darker grain with alot of black mixed in…
The box interior is quite simple and basic…just lined with a velvet bottom.

A while back I sculpted the inside lid of a box and found it to be a problem because after sculpting both the inside and exterior of the top I discovered it made the wood too thin in spots and caused warping that ruined the top.

Greg,

Do you get tired of our admiration? Think it has all been said? And your photography is getting better too?

Krenov said somethin like …each thing we do teaches us something if we take time to look at our mistakes and our successes…( more my interpretation) But my man it appears that is what you are doing? It also appears to be translating into your bigger pieces? I am envious and inspired by your skill.

This piece should go to a juried contest?

Have you considered a commercial How too DVD on your box building?

Greg your work is astounding. I really like this new Cocobolo box. Cocobolo is one of my favorite woods to work with.

I will also join the group screaming for a tutorial - even if it's something that you produce on a DVD and charge for.

I just went through all of your project post. It is nice to see how your own style has evolved from your first carved and sanded pieces which were more rounded to the more hardlined pieces you do now. I also see how that style has been included in your furniture and wall mirrors etc. The most recent pieces really show the refinement of the technique. we never stop learning!

Wow..thank you everyone for the great comments. I have so much fun making these and try to be innovative a bit more for each next box. I firmly believe that finding the right piece of wood makes all the difference in the world for a box to have a noticable appearance. The Cocobolo is definitely one of my favorites because of its intense grain variations…but it is getting more difficult to find good Cocobolo. When I take a cocobolo box to a show it always seems to draw the most attention and sell quickly.

Rance…I added some inside photos but the inside id just plain flat wood with a velvet bottom…nothing special.

RonFinch…Sorry you missed the Covington show. It was fun and there were alot of great and talented artists there. I hope to do it next year but I am also hoping to do the Madisonville Wooden Boat show. In 2011 they were both on the same weekend.

I hope to do a totorial about the box making. Other boxmakers have done tutorials better than I am capable of doing…

As soon as I looked at the Top Three, I knew this was your style. You really have developed your own style. Keep up the great work.

looked atyour previous posting as it is presently on the projects page and it is excellent as well. The pics being on the same page allow comparisons. To me both boxes are examles of how well you are bringing the components of style, form, color and movement together in your work. I see how the wood you have used here blends with your wave cuts.

Greg, Words are insufficient to complement this box. I'll just say it is my favorite of all your boxes. The beautiful wood was nice but your artistry is what really made this one. Surely, you can't top this one. I've said that before and you proved me wrong!

Wow, that's a real humdinger of a box. Ultra nice, color, grain and finish are beautiful. Very good workmanship. All of them are very beautiful.
