Project Information

Here is another Bowl I turned from Claro Walnut. I just love the grain variations and the color difference that runs throughout this wood.

8 inch diam. X 3 3/4 inch tall. Turned to 3/16 wall. 6 coats of Tung Oil/Varnish then buffed with the Bealle Buffing System

One of the largest bowls I have done. I love watching the bowl appear from out of the rough blank. Turning has become my ZEN time. Just spin the wood and watch what happens.

Please leave all comments and critiques. I am always trying to improve and your comments help.

Thanks for looking.

Thanks for all the great comments everyone. I really enjoyed making this.

It has been getting easier to make things like this with the more I do. Practice, practice, practice. It sure helps.

Thanks again.

Quite the wood, and excellent form for the bowl. 3/16" walls is incredible… I would have blown out the side.

Looking real good. The grain direction is perfect….I love the deep warm grains that claro has….and you finished it perfectly. Yes, there is a lot to be said for practice…practice…practice and when you are done with that practice….do some more. You have really progressed….that is very evident.

I took a small break from woodturning (other then turning junk pieces to test new tools I am working up)... to re-visit some metal spinning….it is lots of fun….a very interesting way to use a lathe. My plan is to work in some of the metal objects into my woodturning - Always looking for something out of the box to add another dimension to my projects. When I first tried it - metal spinning - it was not being done on wood lathes and there was not much info out there for hobbyists….now there is a metal spinning dvd, Penn is selling beginning kits….and there is a web page and many tutorials dedicated to spinning on smaller lathes - especially wood lathes.

I worked up some tools and built some templates for my Powermatic and so far I have made a couple lids for turned boxes…some nice copper bases for bowls and hollow vessels….a couple candle stick holders that mount on turned wood bases…some bowl liners…and some turned box liners. I really enjoy working in the dual media - if you get a chance - give it a try.

thedude50,
This is the chuck that I used on this bowl.
http://www.pennstateind.com/store/CUG3418CCX.html
I start with the screw mounted in what will be the open top area. Then turn the outside shape rough, and a relief in the bottom for the #2 jaws. I turn it around and do the major turning with it in the chuck. When done (sanded, finished and buffed) I use the "Jumbo Jaws" and hold the bowl by the top edge so I can finish the bottom. If the bowl is too large for the "Jumbo Jaws" I use a "Jam Chuck" to hold it.
Hope this helps.
