Project Information

You might remember this as one of the first projects I posted.

You might also remember that I never finished it. I needed some feet and to finish the inside of the swinging drawers for the pieces.

Well, you can see from the picture above that I finally finished it after around 10-15 years later. I think that this is my last incomplete project that I started a long time ago.

I kept going back to it over the years going over and over on how to arrange and "pocket" the pieces. I came up with a the viable solution you see above. I'm glad that it's finally done. It's really been bugging me for years.

For more details see the original post.

This is very impressive! You did an excellent job and all the different woods really complement each other. Definitely an heirloom piece! Are your game pieces constructed with metal?

Did you turn the pieces yourself? If so, where did you find the hardware for them. This is beautiful. I also have a long term project, it is to duplicate the fantastic backgammon board you made several years ago!

Man that is Sweet. A very fine looking job you did on making that chess board. What do you call those "ball" type catches you used on your drawers? Where did you get them? And last, what are those chess pieces made of? They're beautiful.

Well done Gary, it is certainly an outstanding piece. You need to find someone of "Grandmaster" to play your first game with. You are quite the craftsman, I always enjoy your work.

Thanks for all the kind words!

Now your questions.

devann - They are called "Ball Detents" and I got them at Rockler years ago. They still have them here.

CrazyCraftsman - Bob_O - devann - I turned the body of the pieces from alternating layers of Gabon Ebony and Holly. The base and tops were purchased from Rockler over 10 years ago and they don't carry them anymore. I have looked for them over that past couple of years but have not found them anywhere.

COOL Gary!

I really LIKE the way the drawers spin around, etc. COOL!

You did good 10 years ago… and you're stronger now than ever!

Thank you for remember to finish it! LOL
