Project Information

The red oak used for this bench came from a huge tree that was in the side yard between two houses. We're talking 50 plus inches at brest height and 26 feet long before the first crotch. I had to quarter the log
lenght wise and cut 8 foot sections just to move these logs with my little 4FWD kubota tractor. The boards used for this bench were the first leveling cuts from the sawmill. One side is flat from the sawmill blade and the other is from the chainsaw blade. Thickness varies from 1 1/2" to 1/2". Add in some warp, cup, twist, and a few other defects make these boards canidates for the wood stove. I guess every board is sacred.
The result is a bench with lots of character. No glue or screws. Just M/T and pegs. Dimensions are 47"L x 12"W x 21"H. Timber Pro outdoor sealer for the finish.

It is those defects that give it the best character. Good for you for making this bench!

How come it never looks that good when I leave saw marks in my projects?
