Project Information

This is an EZ Mitre, Shell box with pedestal base.

Size - 100mm square by 50mm high

Materials - Ebony, Sycamore, Sapele, Birch ply and green baise.

Glue - PVA

Finish - 600grit then Wax over Sanding Sealer

Black and white diamonds midway along each top edge (pics 1 and 2). The four sided shapes at the corners align to reveal an equilateral triangle captive in a 3D box of contrasting colour (pics 3 and 4). The diamonds now have one continuous flat edge!. Note, for the base I tried a slightly looser fit so no vent grooves ( as for 'No Quarter' ).
I prefer the tighter fit.

I love how you look at things from all angles and still see the interrelation of the angles. Very cool.

the extra pics helped see this in it's entirety. Very cool. when I look at it, it reminds me of pinwheel design quilt patterns. Very appealing box.

This would be a fun one to see in a video on a turntable, especially if you sped-up the video!

I do like the contrast of color, and agree that the pictures from various sides really helps one appreciate all aspects and angles involved here, not to mention the different ways it plays with the eye.

Another head-scratcher, Martyn. It's getting to where I don't even have to see your name on a project anymore. I look at the photo and think "This could only be Martyn!"

Okay, you've done it again. That triangle was no accident, it's there by design - and that has my mind challenged. And right at bed time too! Now how am I going to sleep?

But I like it.

Your boxes always amaze me! I especially like the way that the corners appear as an equilateral triangle.

Thanks for posting,

Ha. Cool. You never cease to amaze.
I like the corner shots that show the hexagon with the triangle in it. Neat.

What a fun design. The triangles at the corners are an impressive geometrical feat! I really how the triangles look when you see them from the side - quite a difference!

Another beauty Martyn….. love the contrasting woods and the absolute "precise" construction on the pinwheel points and corners….. fantastic!

I agree with Jonathan, I would love to see this on a fast spinning turntable…. WOW !

Wonderful display of geometry Martyn. And I am also blessed with not running into a wall because I lost all sense of depth perception after staring at one of your pieces :) Love how the triangles spill over the sides. Thanks, once again, for sharing your work.

Martyn; Is this the EZ mitre that is used for cutting perfect mitre joints for flooring? If it is, this is amazing usage of a tool. I am still in awe as to how you used the tool. Great job as always.
