Tool Gloat-Craig's List garage sale handtool heaven

I was poking around Craig's List when a garage sale caught my eye. The pictures were a woodworker's dream. They featured lots, and I mean LOTS of hand tools. So I finished up my work and headed over there late Friday afternoon. All the better to root out the best pickings.

The people running the sale were friendly and the place was loaded with tools as advertised. Apparently the gentleman's father had recently passed away after a long career as a carpenter.

I started my perusing with the handsaws. My nest of saws sports one gaping hole-a finer-finish rip saw, preferably in the, 7-8ppi, 20-24" range. I'll be using it to resaw stock and I don't want to use my 5 ½ rip Disston because it leaves a very rough surface that only a lot of sweat and my hand planes can remedy.

The Haul
None of the saws caught my eye but after 30 minutes of "box diving" and some haggling with the owner, my rust-covered hands walked to the car carrying these items.

I paid $27 for the lot of them, $10 for the plane.

I needed to replace some rusty auger bits so I was happy when I found the Irwin bits (which, as it turns out, will need to be sharpened). And the saw files are practically new as you can see from the pics.

I've had my eye out for a Stanley knuckle block plane for a while. They have this eye-catching rounded top, gleaming from a nickel plating. So this #18 made my day.

Looks like a great haul. The #18 was a steal. Now you need to find a #65 to go with it.

Hi Wayne, stay tuned for the rehab post I'm preparing on the #18. And you're SO right about the #65. That would give me a matching low-angle, high-angle pair.
