Project Information

A Front to back rocking hammock. To rock yourself just move on foot, that's all it takes. This is the most relaxing hammock that I have used.

Sorry but it is not my design.

Here is how I made it:
I made a jig to bend the strips around (some old plywood 8' x 2' make a big arch you want to get as many clamps on at the same time as possible Now for the 2×4 material. Make sure you get wet new 2×4 x 8' material from the store then cut on band saw then plane to about 1/4 and pre-bend them before they dry out. I pre-bent them for about 4-5 days it makes the glue up a lot easier. I used a mix of doug fir and redwood and intermixed them. I glued two of them at a time then clamp. you might be able to glue them all at once but i think it is a little risky. Then I used oak for the cross member Make sure to round the edges for your feet and fabric. The fabric is the most expensive part I got some strong outdoor type uv resistant and yet still soft. not like canvas i think it is nylon It runs about $20 a yard and is 5' wide. I used 3 yards. with a strong strap sewn in to the sides for strength. I have weight tested to 500lb. Me and another guy to make sure it can hold some weight.

This is my favorite place to chill in the evenings.

Don't Forget to buy a Gallon Of Glue. I used about a 1/4 gallon of titebond 3 with the glue ups.

I've seen this design before. It retails for about $600. I was thinking of making one myself. I am glad to see this project work out and you made some great tips.

Nice work. Just a tip for those lacking clamps: When I need a particularly long clamp or am short a few clamps, I've often used rope as a tourniquet:

-Pad your work with scrap wood
-Put a loop of strong line (parachute/550 cord is fine) around it with a good knot
-put a wrench or strong stick of wood in between, and start twisting.
-when sufficiently tight, tape or tie the wrench in place so it can't unravel.

Hey Hammy- Love this design and am considering making one for my wife. How did you connect the fabric to the oak stretchers? It looks like you rolled it around the oak a few times, but assume you screwed it or something too? Thanks for the inspiration!
