Project Information

Since my lathe stand was reworked as a shop cart (mentioned in my blog http://lumberjocks.com/jgreiner/blog/25037) I had some spare time while I painted the shop cart and the lathe was sitting out on my work bench.

I picked up this peice of wood from the scrap bin at my local woodcraft for $2 with the intention of making a harry potter style wand. I really liked the way the wood had stripes if you angled it just right. I don't know what the wood is, but it was pretty cool turning for the first time. I need some practice and will need to learn how to sharpen my cheapo lathe tools they weren't that sharp out of the box and made turning a bit rough.

It was a nice afternoon with a quickie woodworking fix.

Very cool. I'm sure there is a little one who will really appreciate it. :)

Looks like an original Harry Potter to me….........Nice job. Did you use a steady rest to get ti down that small in diameter? I like the stripes too!

No, I don't have a steady rest, I sort of just went with the flow of things hoping for the best.

Very cool-a very nice looking wand. Perhaps it is elder wood? ;-) What did you use for the wand's core? Unicorn tail? Phoenix feather?

Is there a phoenix feather inside, by chance? Sharp wand that I'm thinking Ron would love…
