Project Information

These things are really hard! they're far too fiddly, and i'm never making another one.

....although a friend did ask if one could be made that's about 3 feet long, that could be fun.

Techinical stuff.

The hinges are brusso stop hinges (i had to re sink the holes in them as i have no luck with brass screws and had to replace them with stronger ones)

The veneers are walnut and maple

And there are little 3mm dia magnets in the front to act as a catch.

Clay,

If this is your first try at one of these, you get a lot of kudos from me!! No, they're not easy, but then, where's the challenge if it were easy? Also a nice variation on the Crawford theme. I truly hope you don't stop with just one. You obviously have the skill to make some fine boxes. Hope to see more from you.

I second Roger's response for sure, this is a fine looking box, perfect and mistake free fine woodworking projects are very difficult to pull off, You have captured many of the key elements with this very nice box. The shape is superb, and the overall look is eye catching and artistic, I too will be looking forward to seeing more of Your work, thanks for sharing

I remember saying "I'm not doing that crap again"..... Then I find myself back out in the shop doing it again. Nine times out of ten I am glad I jumped back on the horse that kicked my butt…..

Long story short I really like this work…. I for one hope this isn't your last…. Hope to see more in the future….

I really like the gentle double curve on the lid blending into the reverse curve on the bax! That makes your box unique and the inlaid stripe along all the edges makes it outstanding! Don't give up, though. Easy ones, anybody and everybody can make. Hard one by only a few! Also, the harder it is, the more the reward of accomplishment! I ought to know; my Yin Yang cane was carved out of one piece of oak. It called for extreme care carving through the tough grains without an ooops!
Yah, I gave up on these brass screws after four out of 6 broke even after pre-drilling the holes! In fact I now stay away from brass butt hinges that call for brass screws all together. Using magnets is brilliant! I'll have to try that too.

Lovely box, Clay - I'm flattered! The contrast of the walnut and maple works very well. I look forward to seeing more work - loved the livingArk!

Great looking box very well done. No you can't do just one, don't ask me how I know that. My first one went straight to the fireplace, so your doing very well. With each one you will build confidence and skill. I'm waiting for your next one.

Rodger: It is my first one, and for all my promises i'm sure it won't be the last.

Andrew: Thank you. Coming from you that comment has made my day.

On small screws:

First, make sure you've drilled the right pilot hole.

Second, I buy a small box of stainless steel screws of the same type from mcfeelys or elsewhere, I drive the stainless once, almost but not quite all the way in, then back them out and use the brass. I haven't stripped a brass screw since I started that. =)
