Project Information

I have been a member of lumberjocks for a little over 2 ½ years now. I have had the honor of seeing so many different projects posted and they have always been an inspiration to me. I have always wanted to try and make something out of wood but had no clue where to begin. Just this week Dennis Zongker suggested that I try one of his carving classes, "Architectural Ornamental Carving" my thoughts were, I don't know which end of a carving knife to use, what if I cut myself and so on…. I have always admired his work and have watched him design, engineer, and build so many different projects. I figured if he was my teacher what could I lose? So, I said sure I will give it a try.

Well, I was so nervous when I got to his class I thought how in the world am I going to carve a flower when I have never done anything in woodworking except watch? I was amazed by the end of the class that I had a flower… and I did it. It may not be the nicest one and it has a lot of flaws but I am so proud of my little flower and I wanted to share it with everyone here.

Patti,

You have a great first effort. It's better looking than the first thing I ever made. (it was an aquarium stand made from 2×4's)

Patti: that fantastic. The first project. Mount it in a picture frame and hang it on the wall for all to see.

Congratulations Patti. I still have the first piece that I ever carved and was so thrilled when it was finished. Get ready because this adventure is more exciting than any ride at an amusement park. Keep carving-and you might want to buy a pair of gloves and lots of band aids because you will cut your fingers with those sharp edges….....

Great looking flower, now that you know which end of the knife to hold, I hope you will just keep moving
ahead. This is one hobby you can do most anywhere, one carver used to carve while waiting for a doctors
appointment, using his hat to catch the shavings. Hope you enjoy your new artistic outlet for many years.
Thank you for sharing. I had to look at the web site you listed on your home page, while your first effort
may not match some of those projects, all of us had to start somewhere, now that you have started, we
are all cheering for you.

WoW--Patti !!! What a beautiful job you did with "your Sunflower." It would be a very nervous thing to think about in joining the carving class, but you sure diid the right thing, Maybe, it put you at ease a little because you get to see so many carving's that Dennis does. Still I know I would be nervous with that carving tool in my hand……....until I got use to it. I am so proud of you!! You are a Great Lady who has completed project #1, and now I will be waiting to see your project #2.

Love Shirley/Mom
